Design and Pattern Protection
Designs are secured under the Designs Act 2000, along with the associated Design Rules 2001 and (Amendment) Rules 2008. Information regarding filing design applications in India can be procured from the Manual of Designs Practice and Procedure of the Patent Office.
A 'design' has been defined statutorily to denote: "features of shape, configuration, pattern or ornament or composition of lines or colour or combination thereof applied to any article whether two dimensional or three dimensional or in both forms, by any industrial process or means, whether manual, mechanical or chemical, separate or combined, which in the finished article appeal to and are judged solely by the eye."

Benefit of Design and Pattern Protection
There are certain benefits that the person enjoys who register his design for protection. The person who has registered his design for protection enjoys the exclusive right to apply a design to the article in the class in which the design has been registered. A registered user can file an infringement suit. A registered design in India can be put into action by way of a civil action.
