Eligibility for ESIC Registration
The general condition for ESI (Employees' State Insurance) registration eligibility is to have 10 or more employee strength. But in some regions, ESIC is possible only if there are more than 20 employees in the organization.
Additional eligibility criteria to be fulfilled are as follows:
- Any employee having gross salary up to ₹21,000 per month can avail this with the help of the employer.
- Any establishment registered with EPFO.
- The contribution to ESI is 6.5% of the gross salary. The division made is as follows :
- -4.75% by the employer
- -1.75% by the employee
- For industrial bodies, where there are chances of occurrence of injury or health issues at the workplace, all employees with salary below Rs. 21,000 must have ESI.
Now let us discuss the entities that are liable to register for ESIC as per the ESI Act of 1948, where all the organizations are eligible for ESI registration provided they fulfill certain criteria of having the required number of employees in that state. The units covered are:

Benefits of ESIC Registration
There are numerous benefits provided to the workers by ESIC Registration.
Medical facilities: Registered ESI members and their families are provided with the benefits of complete medical facilities and medical insurance.
Maternity benefits: Pregnant women get maternity benefits that are payable up to twenty-six weeks. This period can be extended up to 30 days on medical advice. To be eligible for maternity benefits, employers have to contribute their wages for 70 days in the preceding two contribution periods.
Benefits for PWD: Disabled employees are also entitled to get 90% of their monthly salary as disablement benefits.
Illness Benefits: Absence from work during illness is allowed for a maximum of 91 days a year along with 70% of the monthly salary.
Nominal Benefits: In an unfortunate event such as demise of an employee, the dependents of the deceased shall receive 90% of his/her monthly salary.
Expenses for funeral: An additional amount of Rs.10,000 is given to the family of the deceased employee towards the funeral expenses.
Vocational Rehabilitation facility: Permanently or temporarily physically challenged, insured workers are entitled to vocational rehabilitation training at VRS.
Physical Rehabilitation facility: This for employees who got injured at the work premises or have been injured due to occupational hazards and caused a physical ailment.
Old Age Medical benefits: An annual payment of Rs. 120 as medical care benefits for retiring ESI employees or for those who are opting for VRS/ERS are also facilitated.
Extended illness benefits: This is for those ESI registered employees who are suffering from chronic diseases, can avail the extended sickness benefit for up to 2 years. It can be availed of once the standard sick leave of 91 days has expired.
Documents Required for ESIC Registration

- Registration certificate or license issued by Shops and Establishments Acts/Factories Act
- Address proof of the establishment
- Copy of PAN card of the entity
- Copy of bank statement/canceled cheque
- Photocopy of the last tax/property bill
- Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association or Partnership Deed or Trust Deed as per the type of business
- Certificate of Commencement of business
- Registration Number of CST, ST or GST
- The monthly pay sheet is also required for computing the amount contributed towards each employee for ESI filings.

Following are the simple steps for ESIC Registration process: -
Step1: Go to the Official Website for ESIC Registration
Step 2: create a new account by login credentials
Step 3: you receive the login credentials in your email that you have saved in the previous step. And use the same log in details to log in and start the application
Step 4: once you enter the log in details, you see the application form page popping up. Fill in the Application Form with required and necessary details correctly.
Step 5: upon completing the application form, proceed with the payment of fees online
Step 6: Receive the ESIC Code Number. After complete verification of the submitted application and documents, ESIC issues the ESIC code containing 17-digit UIN and the ESIC Registration Certificate.
