CBI Arrests Senior Income Tax Official for demanding Rs 4 Lakh Bribe in Mumbai

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior official of the Income Tax (IT) department from Mumbai for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh from a person in exchange for a lower TDS (tax deducted at source) certificate concerning the sale of a property.

According to the CBI, the accused, identified as Vikas Bansal, demanded the bribe for issuing a low TDS certificate in connection with the sale of that property that belonged to the complainant’s maternal uncle, who is an NRI.

The CBI further said that Bansal initially demanded two per cent of the property's total value as a bribe, but the amount was later reduced to one per cent, amounting to Rs 5 crore.

Later, Bansal accepted Rs 4 lakh as the first instalment of the bribe amount.

After receiving a complaint from the person, the CBI laid a trap and caught Bansal red-handed while accepting the bribe amount on May 2 in his office located in the Air India Building in Mumbai's Nariman Point.

Searches were also conducted at the office and residential premises of the accused, leading to the recovery of Rs 15 lakh in cash, gold jewellery, and papers related to investments in immovable and movable properties. Further investigation into the case is underway.
