If you are a salaried taxpayer, there are chances that you have received a message from the Income Tax department related to the total tax deducted at source or TDS.
“Total TDS by employer of PAN xxx for Qtr ending Dec 31 is Rs xxx and cumulative TDS for FY 23-24 is Rs xxx. View 26AS for details. ITD Team,” read the tax department’s message (sent as an SMS), which has been sent out to salaried taxpayers.
The message has confused several taxpayers, with some wondering if they need to pay more to the tax department.
However, there is nothing to worry about as the message is not a demand for any additional tax payment.
It is just an acknowledgement from the tax department regarding the total TDS deposited during the final quarter (Q4) and the previous financial year.
It is worth noting that this SMS alert service is not new and was introduced at the end of 2016. This was solely aimed at notifying taxpayers about their total TDS deductions.
The tax department’s message will also help salaried individuals match the details with their office salary slips as it will provide clarity about possible tax dues or excess deductions.
Meanwhile, the Income Tax department has made available online forms, namely, ITR-1, ITR-2, and ITR-4 for filing tax returns for the financial year 2023-24 (FY24) on its website.
Taxpayers can visit the Income Tax department's online portal to file their taxes using these forms. It may be noted that the last day to file the income tax returns (ITR) for FY24 is July 31, 2024.
