Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and AIADMK Coordinator O. Panneerselvam has appealed to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin about discussing with his counterpart in the other states of India on Wednesday. He has also urged the Chief Minister to discuss with the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to bring petrol and diesel under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework net.
Stalin made a similar appeal to include petrol and diesel under GST while being in the opposition party and the senior leader of DMK. Considering this gesture of Stalin, Lok Sabha member T.R. Baalu has commented that his party would be in support of this proposal made by Stalin. According to the statement made by Panneerselvam, the Central government and the DMK are on the same page in this matter. Panneerselvam has mentioned that the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has recently stated while answering a question at a function that petrol and diesel could be included under the GST framework only if the Tamil Nadu Finance Minister agrees to it.
The former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had earlier said that if petrol and diesel are included under the GST framework, then the price of petrol and diesel will get diminished by Rs.25 and Rs.30 per litre respectively. According to the statement of Panneerselvam, the DMK had previously announced to reduce the prices of diesel by Rs.4 per litre but has not fulfilled its promise. Rather, the prices of petrol have increased by a margin of Rs.17.68 per litre and the prices of diesel have gone up by Rs.14.29 per litre as soon as the DMK came to power in Tamil Nadu. As per the statement of Panneerselvam, the state government is now raking in higher revenue.
