Federal Reserve Chair Powell to Speak at Treasury Market Conference

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will speak at the 2024 Treasury Market Conference.  

Chair Powell will have the first opportunity to share his thoughts since the Federal Reserve unexpected 50 basis point interest rate cut. Chair Jerome H. Powell will deliver the significant remark (via pre-recorded video) at the 2024 Treasury Market Conference (9:20 AM) on September 26th at the New York Federal Reserve Bank.  

The September 6th and 7th FOMC meetings ended with a 500 bps rate decrease compared to the generally accepted consensus of 25 bps. Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman was the only member to vote in favor of a 25 basis point drop, ignoring the majority's 50 basis point cut. The September FOMC meeting proceedings will be released on October 9, but speeches by Fed officials and Chairman Powell could shed light on the Fed's future direction. 

A webcast of the meeting will be available on the New York Federal Reserve website on September 26 at 9:00 a.m. A summary of the meeting will begin at 9:15 a.m. Michael S. Barr, Fed Vice Chairman for Oversight, will speak from 10:30 to 10:50 a.m. US Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen will also be speaking at the 2024 Treasury Market Conference from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.   

The US Treasury market is the genuine and most liquid government pledge market in the world. It plays an important and unique role in the global economy. It serves as the primary source of funding for the US Federal Government, a primary investment and hedging tool for global investors, a risk-free benchmark for other financial instruments, and an important market for the execution of financial instruments. It also plays a key role in the monetary policy of the Federal Reserve System.   

Since 2015, the U.S. Treasury Department, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (the Joint Members) have jointly hosted an annual conference to examine current developments in the US Treasury market.   

The Joint Members will hold their 10th Annual Conference at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Thursday, September 26, 2024. This year's conference will feature keynote speakers and expert panels on a range of financial market topics, including representatives from mutual member institutions and the public and private sectors.
